I graduated from Anderson University in Anderson, Ind. with a B.A. in public relations and a minor in nonprofit leadership. I am currently the marketing and media manager at a local theatre.
It is simple to say that the Winds Division of WGI is just an indoor version of a marching band, but they are two very different sports within the arts. The most significant difference between indoor winds and marching band is the setting. Marching band performances are typically held at football games on the field during halftime in the summer and fall months of the year.
The beginnings of the piccolo stem from the same place as the flute: a military flute from the Middle Ages. As the flute would evolve, so would the piccolo—but in a much smaller way. As keys and rods were added to the flute, they were also added to the piccolo.
Kirby Gilliam is using her passion for music to help others. After graduating from Anderson University in 2010, Gilliam taught music at a high school for a few years. “I had a lot of kids who were coming to me with issues that were not the scope of a music educator,” said Gilliam, who became a certified music therapist.
Current MBA student, Ruvidson Morton BA ’17, is from Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean. His large family was there when Hurricane Irma barreled through. Suzy Thompson BA ’98 was in Pasadena, Texas, with six of her family members as Hurricane Harvey led its path of destruction.
Mike Thigpen, director of the Cultural Resource Center (CRC), has been teaching lessons on fear, anger, and shame. “I feel so often in our society we have allowed the message to be carried by one group; it’s the offended group. It causes the majority to feel fear, anger, or shame,” said Thigpen.
Scott Tilley BA ’86 joined the Anderson University alumni staff in December 2016 as the new director of alumni engagement and annual giving. For the past 17 years, Tilley has served as an associate pastor at River Oaks Community Church in Goshen, Ind.
The Black Student Association hosted the largest Tri-S trip at Anderson University by taking 27 students to Washington, D.C., to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The students left Feb. 23 and returned Feb. 26.
Candles and Carols has been a holiday tradition at AU for 52 years. The show celebrates the holiday season with the different performance groups at AU. This year, Candles and Carols took place on Friday, Dec. 2 and featured more than 250 student performers.
Rick Vale, the stage director of “Deathtrap,” the upcoming fall play at AU, says that “this show is described as a ‘comic thriller’ because it has elements of a murder-mystery as told in a comic way.”
